Just work your way down the list calling all STT rentals (the ones that will let you take their vehicles to St. John, anyway) and all STJ rentals.

We are heading to St John in November for our 5th time. Absolutely love everything about the island and the experience. We stay in a villa usually with one or two other couples and enjoy the laid back, DIY aspect of STJ. While we enjoy staying in a villa, we are definitely not against staying in a resort.
