Here, you will be able to place, build, and upgrade different buildings. As you unlock more buildings, you can edit the layout. All buildings will require certain materials to build, but it is free to move them.

It helps you get up on top of your city, if you build high. It can also be helpfull in some events, like catching fireflies. Sometimes, they are really high up, and the air draft will get you lots of air :) I find it useful getting the annoyingly high up green jellies.
