You firstly have to make sure that your cable puls the throttle all the way back. If this does not happen you have to adjust your cables. Another problem can be that the roller of the carb hits the cam to soon. This also increases the idle rpm.To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig a spark tester and have the gap set to 7/16". Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire.
Apr 7, 2020. #1. Well I just checked the timing on my johnson 140 and in forward idle it’s supposed to be 4-6 degrees “throttle pickup”. I was at 16!! It was warmed up and in a tub of water. When I moved the timer base rubber stop forward till it hit, I was getting 4 degrees.
Put a timing light on #1, and place the timing linkage in idle position. Crank the engine, and note the reading. Should be around 4*ATDC. While the engine is cranking, move the linkage manually, watching the timing move using the timing light. It will move on the flywheel toward that 18* mark.
Re: 1995 Johnson 200HP carb adjustment. You adjust the timing by gauging how far the timer base moves. The timer base sets under the flywheel and an arm that protrudes out on the starboard side and is connected to the throttle lever by a link rod.
