John deere 318 no spark.

318 p218 no spark during crank. I picked up a low hour (401) 318. It does not have spark during crank, but as you let the key spring back to run it will fire. If you play with it, it will eventually catch and run indefinitely. I tried a known good switch I had and got the same result. I have the wiring schematic my local dealer printed for me.Solved. A friend of mine asked for my help fixing his John Deere Gator 850i and after doing some diagnostics I have come to the conclusion that it has no spark to either cylinder. I checked this by getting a test light and putting one end on the spark plug and one in the boot. The light did not flash or anything.The only reason the VTX doesnt is because the Bosch +4 plugs seem to work better in that particular application. A couple online Deere parts stores sell the Deere/NGK plug and show “standard gap .025” in description. However, the 2238 comes pre-gapped at .040, and NGK recommends not altering the gap by more than .008. Arrgh!

Be sure you are testing the presence of spark correctly -- the Onan is a wasted spark style configuration and the two plugs are wired IN SERIES, so you need to ground the unobserved plug when viewing the other for spark intensity.This is how I remove the flywheel from Onan engines.

With spark plugs in engine, key in on position, placed ohm meter on positive and negative of the coil - reading is 17 ohms. Used jumper cable wires to go from positive battery terminal to positive terminal on coil - still won't fire.
