The engine I am planning to build is a 406-421 sbc with approx. 11.5:1 comp, sportman II ported heads, victor jr. intake, 1 3/4 headers with a max of 6500-7000 RPM and was going with a solid lifter cam. ALTHOUGH i had a 355 with a big solid lift cam, and brodix 200race rite heads that was 11.5-1. changed the bottom end to a 383, dropped the compression to 8.5-1 (for procharger) and went to solid roller. the 383 would KILL the 355 motor for motor. in other words the low compression 383 would kill the higher compression 355. both can run well.

Other than a lot of expense, never noticed a difference in actual performance gains. the 6" rod 400 required a small base (.900) cam which was expensive. I have actually built a SBC 383 using the stock 400 5.56 rod and stock flat top 350 pistons from Mahle which have a shorter skirt design to clear the crank counterweights.
