The blog post told us the NPC update is build 43. 42 is a misc update with some new features, but nothing immensely big. Keep in mind that although build 40-41 took a full year or so, they claim that this was only due to the complete rewrite it basically required of the game. The hope is that builds 42-43-44 and onward will not take nearly as long.
especially since we still have some more build 41 builds to come - and so realistically we can maybe expect a stable final build 41 by the end of the year - but that doesn't mean that build 42 is then going to be soon after that (is two entirely separate things - build 41 being complete, and build 42 being ready to begin public testing)
