Unless you have a compelling need to use MPLABX v5.40 I would recommend you uninstall it, be sure you delete the cached folders too. Then install MPLABX v5.25 and use it until Microchip address the ICD stability issues. If you get a Snap or PICKit4 be certain you are getting the most current build of the hardware.

A third party library had been changed by the Content Manager to a version which had different files. MPLABX stopped supporting 32 bit compiler tools after version 5.35. That is why MPASM is now gone. If the CCS compiler has not been updated to 64 bit, there's no way it will run under MPLABX 5.50.
